July's Garden

Every issue of The Paper will close with seasonal notes on the garden by the wonderful landscape designer Elizabeth Tyler

For July, Elizabeth shares her tips on pruning, sowing and enjoying the garden.

With the first flush of roses over, my mind turns to ‘summer pruning’. Rather than just deadheading single blooms on my roses I cut back a few more notches, this helps with fresh growth and even sturdier stems for their second flowering later in the summer.

I also cut back plants like Salvia, Centranthus and Geranium to help encourage another flush of growth. Although I’m still sowing successional salads and herbs in my raised beds, now is the time when I try to just enjoy the garden (as well as watering where needed!) before the flurry of autumn descends.
